SIMONE DE KINDEREN
Ex Limes, one channel video, 53'04 min, film still, 2014/15  In Ex Limes the Syrian refugee Reda shares with us his story, which is at the same time the story of so many other refugees. His hypnotic voice, his search for the correct English words and the slow images drag you into his everyday life reality. The visible part of this reality is full of emptiness, of boredom, but one can sense that leaving a country during a war, doesn't mean that you will leave the fight left behind. For a period of 3 months, Simone met every week with Reda to talk and film with him. She took on a part of the journey that he had made, by visiting all the refugee centers where he has been in the Netherlands, trying to understand just a little bit of what he must have been going through. Asking her self about what 'home' means to us. There are the ones who create the rights and conditionalities for us to live somewhere, but how is this compared to our rights to choose where we want to live, where we want to belong to, who we want to be?
